Storyboard and Short Film Concept: A Day in the Life of My Camera

Initially a spontaneous idea based on Dizga Vertov's "A Man with a Camera", "A Day in the Life of My Camera" centres itself around my phone camera leaving the owner's (that's me!) side and exploring its surrounding environment. The film has four themes or 'acts': morning, lunch, late afternoon/dinner and night.

When it came to the film, I took certain aspects of Vertov's film that I personally really liked and explored upon them more, however the personification of the camera remained at the forefront of all my ideas. The other aspects that I took included: most of the techniques used (fade ins, fast and slow motion, Dutch angles, tracking shots, reverse footage, close-ups and jump cuts), the idea of the film containing different themes (like the beach or morning scenes), capturing people unaware and the concept that the camera can go into places that a human can't (such as under a car not hoisted or a box of chocolates). The film is intended to be more light-hearted and fun compared to Vertov's much more serious, but occasionally humorous, take on the world around him.

Over time I decided to narrow the film to just four 'Acts' that centred around specific times or an event of a specific time. I also decided that each different act would be centred and focused around a theme rather than have it constantly cut back to me doing work like I had thought out in the initial film. This was due to the fact whenever Vertov switched to another 'act' in the film (like from the workers to the beach), the events there would be centred around that theme and not have any of the previous themes disrupt it.

I included the unedited version as certain parts of the edited version might be blurry and confusing from the old film-looking filter, so the unedited version serves to clear those blurry aspects up!
